How this is estimated

Snow depth is modelled by replaying this season's weather hour by hour — snowfall, melt, sunshine and settling — then checked against government snow stations. The yearly-average line is the same model averaged over recent seasons, so the comparison is like-for-like. Resorts report depth on packed, groomed pistes, so their figure is usually lower, especially on high, wind-exposed summits.

How this forecast works

Snow Maps blends four global weather models and works out the rain/snow line hour by hour, then calculates snowfall separately at the base (1050 m), mid-mountain (1625 m) and upper mountain (1913 m) of Champéry. Colder, higher terrain gets a lighter, deeper snow ratio. The range shows how far the individual models disagree: a wide range means low confidence.
